Understanding the terminology

Broadband is a high-speed internet connection that has overtaken the older dial-up connections as the standard way to connect to the internet. It is available for the home and business communities via your PC or laptop, or on the move via your mobile device using 3G or 4G connections, not to mention the abundance of free WiFi outlets.
Fibre to the Cabinet is also known as FTTC. It’s one of main ways in which fibre optic broadband is being delivered to both homes and businesses. The main advantage of FTTC is that it uses existing broadband infrastructure - exchanges, street cabinets and copper wire - to deliver broadband to homes and properties.
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It is a technology for transmitting digital information at a high bandwidth on existing phone lines to homes and businesses. Unlike the older dialup phone service, ADSL is always available. ADSL was specifically designed to exploit the one-way nature of most multimedia communication in which large amounts of information flow toward the user while only a smaller amount of interactive information is returned.
There are many ares of rural UK where it is not yet possible to obtain broadband speeds sufficient for modern business. In these instances we would offer Satellite broadband. As the term suggests, it uses a satellite dish to provide two-way access to broadband services. Satellite Broadband requires a clear line of sight to the south.
LLU stands for Local Loop Unbundling. In simple terms, Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is the process of opening up a telephone exchange so that it can be used by a number of different broadband providers. These broadband providers are then able to connect your home or business, through to the network exchange.
Ethernet First Mile (EFM or Ethernet Internet) is a low cost leased line technology. It offers huge cost savings over the traditional fibre leased lines. EFM provides symmetrical bandwidth at speeds of up to 20 Mbps with no contention and as the bandwidth is not shared, it does not slow down, and remains consistent. EFM is most suitable for VOIP or VPN services especially when small business require a consistent connection to their cloud based applications or services. Because it is resilient, it is suitable for mission critical business applications.
